Excursion in the nature

An excursion in the nature to make with the mean of transportation you prefer, always respecting nature, so on foot or by bike, visiting sites that haven't still been altered by human presence.

This excursions discovers the sandy coast of Punta Sabbioni and its suggestive natural environment. Different kinds of flora and fauna meet in this small area creating an interesting landscape, shaped during a long time by wind and salty water. From the water-line and sandy coast, where no plant is able to root, going towards the inner part, you will see the dunes, the pinewood and the coastal wood, more protected from wind and more hospitable, with a rich variety of flora and fauna: wild orchid, rosemary-leaf willows, hawthorns, black poplars, white alders, stone pines.

Among the animals which live here there are: the agile frog, the coluber, the shrike, the hoopoe, thepied woodpecker, the oriole, the cuckoo, thegreenfinch, the pheasant and the hedgehog. As counterpoint to the sandy coast, there is the area of "Orti di Punta Sabbioni", with a rural landscape, the rows of hedges and small vineyards, and the area of the harbour, with the typical marine fauna and avifauna (gulls, terns, black terns, grebes). The excursion ends at the harbour, where there's is the long dam and the Lighthouse of Punta Sabbioni, which signals the main access to the Venice lagoon. This was the point, in ancient times, where the sailing ships of spices and oriental goods passed while coming from far away harbours.

 

 

Mean of transportation: on foot

Route: from Punta Sabbioni head along Lungomare Dante Alighieri and walk until the beach; go ahead in via Montello until you get to coastal wood and the dunes - Orti di Punta Sabbioni - Via Adige - first part of Via Hermada - Via Podagora - Via A. Fradeletto - Punta Sabbioni.

Lenght: about 10 km 

Duration: about 2.30 hours (excluding the breaks)

Roads: the excursions takes place on a paved seafront, on the beach and on paths in the wood. The last part, in the orti (vegetable gardens), is on a white street without much traffic.

Rest stops: there are cafès, restaurants and shops in Punta Sabbioni and on the seafront

Recommended period: from April to October

Clothing: light, suitable for an excursion, with shoes fit to walk on the sand and a head covering

Warnings: the seafront areas can be very windy
