Cres Island

The southern town of Osor is linked to the island of Lussino with a drawbridge. The island was already inhabited since the beginning of the
Stone Age, and the continuity in the presence of human settlements is reported by a
rich historical and cultural inheritance: the “Castellieri dei
Libumi”, the remains of old towns, little churches dating back to the
beginning of the catholic era scattered on the island, monasteries, and
ruins of the cities of the Serenissima Republic... and then the modern
monuments.
Cres is characterised by sharp differences between its
northern part, typically sub Mediterranean, with thick woods of oaks, hornbeams, elms and
horse chestnuts, and the medium and southern part, the Mediterranean part, rich in grazing and thick scrub. The lovers of nature will find
an area rich in plants and animals with an exceptional number of
endemic species. Cres is also the only place where a very
rare bird, the griffon, still lives. We recommend also a visit to the “Blue Grottos”,
a marvellous natural area close to the beach of Lubenice.
