Established in the early 1000 (between 1086 and 1105), Monte Sant’Angelo was the capital of a vast Norman possession. Visit to the Gargano Jeep National Park – Umbrian Forest Safari
Peschici distance – Umbrian forest: 28 km.
The Gargano National Park was established in 1991. The park covers around 118 thousands hectares (one of the most extensive protected areas). The Tremiti islands are also part of this park. The heart of the Gargano National Park is the Umbrian forest, the largest forest of deciduous trees of Italy, of approximately 15 thousands hectares.
Entering his this ancient forest is like traveling back in time: the forest, often mentioned by famous Roman Empire writers like Ovidio or Strabo, is the most important legacy of the primitive Millennial Selva and owes the name of “Umbra” to the fact that the sun’s rays can hardly penetrate it.
In this biological area ( 0.7% of the national territory) surrounded by the sea and the plain of the Tavoliere, dwell around 33% of Italian plant species and 170, of the 237, species of birds are nesting.
On foot, you can walk the forest for kilometers, following the countless paths and enjoying numerous parking and picnic areas. There are also graceful refreshment places, where you can refresh yourself with tasty dishes.
