Duino and the Rilke Trail

The Rilke Trail, from the poet of the same name R.M. Rilke, is certainly one of the most beautiful and evocative walks in the Gulf of Trieste. The path, which is directly accessible from Camping Village Mare Pineta, connects Sistiana to Duino along a cliffside path along the beautiful cliffs. Along the way are military outposts carved into the rock and overlooking the sea. The trail ends at Duino Castle, the historic home of the Princes of Thurn und Taxis (Thurn und Taxis).

The Castle of Duino

GPS coordinates

You can visit the castle, the beautiful park overlooking the sea, and the World War II bunker, now turned into a small museum, every day except Tuesdays. The castle has its origins in Roman times, but the first real fortress, of which only a few remains remain, was built on the promontory adjacent to the one where the present castle stands, which dates back to the 1400s. During the First War it suffered heavy damage and was rebuilt with major renovations that, however, changed little of the appearance of the ancient castle. The park is home to an important variety of Mediterranean flowers and plants among the avenues full of statues and archaeological finds.
