Vignola Mare: Between Spanish Towers, the Hermitage in the Rock and the Charm of Limbara

Vignola Mare is one of the pearls of northern La Gallura, where the Mediterranean scrub smells intensely and the sea fades from turquoise to deep blue. Staying at Baia Blu La Tortuga Camping Village means being in the heart of this Paradise, strategically located to explore unspoiled coastlines and historic villages.

Secrets of the Sea and the Coast

  • The Beach and the Tower: The “home” beach is a long stretch of golden sand, ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Dominating the shoreline is the majestic Vignola Tower, a 16th-century Spanish fortification that offers an incredible vantage point over the Straits of Bonifacio.

  • The Little Church of St. Silverio: A few minutes from the campground, along a coastal path to the east, stands this tiny church built on the rocks just a stone’s throw from the water. Nestled between pink granite and the sea, it is a magical place, ideal for enjoying the sunset.

  • The Coves and Trekking: Continuing along the coastline one encounters hidden coves and cliffs shaped by the wind. Here the granite takes on incredible shapes, perfect for snorkeling among fish-rich rocks or coastal trekking.

Red Rocks and Magical Geology

Not far away is Monte Russu, an imposing promontory of red granite plunging into the sea, protected as a site of community interest. This natural area offers trails that wind through arbutus and myrtle trees, giving spectacular views from the top that sweep all the way to Corsica.

About 25 minutes from Vignola, toward Luogosanto, hides the Hermitage of San Trano (the “ghost town”), a tiny church literally carved inside a huge granite tafone. With its altar carved out of natural rock, it is a place of archaic spirituality that embraces all of inland La Gallura.

Traditions and Ancient Legends

  • The Village of Aglientu: To discover the rural soul, climb up to this hamlet. The MudA (Museum of Agro Pastoralism) tells the story of local life through the culture of stazzi, the typical rural houses. In summer, the village comes alive with food festivals where you can enjoy Seadas and Chiusoni.

  • Secrets of Mount Limbara: Imposing granite massif rich in forests, climbing routes and springs. The name comes from the Latin Limes Bal ares (Roman border between the Corsican and Balari peoples). Fun fact: During the Cold War it hosted a strategic U.S. USAF radio base.

  • The Elephant Rock: Moving toward Castelsardo, one encounters this famous natural monument made of rust-colored trachyte. Shaped by weathering to the point of looking like a pachyderm, the large boulder holds two important domus de janas (prehistoric tombs) inside.
