Bear Rock and the Fortifications

The Capo d’Orso promontory takes its name from the large wind-carved rock resembling the silhouette of a bear that sits on the end of the promontory. From here there is a spectacular panoramic view of the La Maddalena archipelago. In northern Sardinia, particularly the dicosta stretch in front of the La Maddalena Archipelago, there are numerous military fortifications dating back to the late 1800s, built as protective outposts by the French. From Bear Rock continuing towards Palau and Porto Rafael, one reaches the Monte Altura Battery, still in good condition.

The Monte Altura Battery is one of the military fortifications in the territory of Palau, with the Capo d’Orso and Baragge batteries. These structures were erected in the late 1800s on the north coast of Sardinia and the islands of the Maddalena Archipelago and played a crucial function in defense against the French and an important role throughout the Mediterranean. The fortress can be visited from April to October exclusively by guided tours, partly for security reasons. During the summer period, the facility is also used for events and concerts.

It is a true work of art sculpted by nature. In fact, the rock has been shaped by winds that have removed the most fragile parts, resulting in its shape similar to that of a huge bear. Bear Rock was a well-known point for sailors since ancient times, used as a reference in navigational routes.
