An ancient venue for games, fairs, popular performances and executions, the square is surely one of the most famous in the world. An inscription by Bernini on the Porta del Popolo wishes a happy entrance into the square, at the center of which stands the Obelisk, where the twin churches Santa Maria di Montesanto and Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Valadier’s two fountains can be seen.

The most elegant square in Rome, at the foot of the Pincio Hill, Piazza si Spagna is famous for its steps, at the top of which stands the Trinità dei Monti church, and for the “Barcaccia” fountain by Bernini. A refined and eighteenth-century meeting point, the square was frequented by illustrious poets such as John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley.

This famous Fountain, one of the symbols of Rome, was built by Nicola Salvi and Giuseppe Pannini. Throwing a coin into the fountain is a well-established custom of tourists of all nationalities to ensure they return to Rome.

The pantheon is one of the best preserved monuments of Ancient Rome. What makes it famous is the dome on the top of which is “the oculus,” a circular opening 9 m in diameter from which sunlight filters in and illuminates the entire building. Inside are the remains of King Victor Emmanuel II and the famous painter and artist Raphael Sanzio. Its splendid dome was an inspiration to Brunelleschi for his dome in Florence.

Rome’s most joyous square and among the most famous in the world, built on the ashes of Domitian’s Stadium, is a must-see for Romans and tourists alike. The square, surrounded by many cafes and populated by street artists, painters and portrait painters, is home to the Fountain of the Moor, the Fountain of Neptune and the better known Fountain of Rivers ,one of Bernini’s most beautiful and imaginative works.
