Activities and excursions in Peschici

Peschici – The Old Town
Peschici’s quaint old town is all about discovery: the narrow alleys, between houses and stairways, create a labyrinth in which to get lost. In addition, the village is full of workshops and all kinds of small stores where you can buy local handicrafts and typical products. Then the food and wine part cannot be missed: between taverns and restaurants, clubs, wine bars and pubs, the center offers several alternatives in which to discover the scents and flavors that define this land.

Peschici – The medieval castle
Peschici’s castle dramatically characterizes the already picturesque appearance of the delightful Gargano town. It in fact rises above a high rock overhanging the sea. Built by the Normans between the 10th and 11th centuries for the purpose of defending these lands from attacks and raids by Saracens and pirates, over the centuries it has undergone multiple renovations depending on the historical period. Today only the lower floor of the castle can be visited where weapons and food stores were kept–and prisoners.

The medieval dungeon museum is open daily: 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m.; 4:30-0 p.m.

Peschici – The Church of St. Elijah Prophet
Don’t miss the church dedicated to the town’s patron saint, built around 1200.
The Peschici community is very devoted to its patron saint. In fact, the saint’s intercession is believed to have contributed to the deliverance from the locust invasion that was destroying crops. In the church is a beautiful high altar and no less than six side chapels, two located on the left and four on the right. Also of some importance are three Latin inscriptions: the first above the crucifix located behind the high altar; the other two in the Libetta Chapel, which also houses that of Prince Pinto from 1736, carved on the occasion of the donation of a painting. Every year, from July 19 to 21, Peschici celebrates St. Elias with three days full of folklore that ends with fireworks.

Mass times: Mon-Sat 5 p.m. | Sun 7:30 a.m.; 11 a.m.; 5 p.m.

Market
The market in Peschici is held every first and third Saturday of the month at the old sports field, near the cemetery and bus stop. Inside the market you can find typical Gargano food and wine products, clothing, gifts, fruits and vegetables, and many other products.

The market opens at 7:30 a.m. and closes at 1:30 p.m.
