Historic cafes

Trieste is in many ways the city of coffee, not only thanks to famous Illy industry but to the retro charm of the city’s historic coffee houses, frequented by the likes of Stendhal, Joyce, and Svevo. Today, so-called historic cafes have become real tourist destinations.

It is the oldest café in Trieste and is filled with decorations by the painter Gatteri and magnificent mirrors specially arrived from Belgium. In 1997 it was restored while preserving the sophisticated and elegant style reminiscent of the Viennese café tradition.

Opened in 1914 it was entirely destroyed in the First War as it was a meeting place for the anti-Austrian movement. From the 1920s, when it was rebuilt, it represented a meeting place for intellectuals, including Saba, Svevo and Giotti.
